Bless the Lord, O My Soul

In Psalm 103, David writes some beautiful and comprehensive lyrics spelling out the reasons why the Lord is to be praised, and exhorting all creation, including his own soul, to respond with appropriate praise.  Here are a few excerpts:

"Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name!

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Bless the Lord, O you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his word,
obeying the voice of his word!
Bless the Lord, all his hosts,
his ministers, who do his will!
Bless the Lord, all his works,
in all places of his dominion.
Bless the Lord, O my soul!"

As we wrap up our series on the Word from Psalm 119 this Sunday, it is my prayer that we, as a church, would be forever changed through this study.  That our hearts would be ignited in a passion to study and respond to the Word of God.  May passages like this in Psalm 103 never again just be repetitive, mundane refrains for us.  But may our hearts rise in gratefulness and praise as we read the Living Word of God.  May our response to reading words like these never again be to simply put our Bible down and move on into the rest of our day, unaffected, unchanged.  May we rise in response, roused from our routines and prompted to sing praise to the One who has healed our diseases and forgiven our iniquities....the One who has redeemed each and every one of us from the pit!  O, my soul - O, my friends - Bless the Lord!

That's what we'll be doing this Sunday as we gather.  Here are the Scriptures and songs that will make up the structure of our service all in the hope and expectation that the Spirit of God would actively move among us and that our hearts would respond appropriately to Him as he does as He has promised to do in and for us as we gather.
