Unshakeable Future in Christ

Hebrews 12:22–24 “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant.”

Hebrews 12:28–29 “Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.”

Often, it’s easy to let anxiety, fear, worry, or negative thoughts rule our mind in this crazy and broken world.  We make these thoughts idols above God. This passage speaks about this hopeful place where we are destined to live, Mount Zion, where God dwells.  But why is this place so full of hope?  This heavenly kingdom provides ultimate life, peace, and joy beyond our present day.  But how do we, broken sinners, receive such an inheritance?  We are able to receive this kingdom because Jesus interceded for us as our mediator and suffered for our sins so that we can live with him forever.  What a blessing!  Our hope is no longer in the broken kingdoms of this world, but our hope is in the unshakable heavenly kingdom of God.   As a result, we should cast aside a heart of complaint, turn, and worship God.  Our God is holy, set apart, and is a just judge.  As verse 29 says, he is a consuming fire. We need to understand that we couldn’t worship this God of consuming fire if it weren’t for Christ.  He brought us to himself.  So let come together this Sunday morning and worship with reverence and awe.
