People Welcomed Jesus as King

Jesus is the Messiah spoken about by the prophet Zechariah: “Look, your King is coming to you; He is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9).

READ ALL OR PARTS OF Matthew 21:1-17; (Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:35-46; and John 12:12-19)  FROM YOUR BIBLE OR WATCH THE BIBLE STORY VIDEO.

DISCUSSION: When was the last time you cheered? Did you start the cheer – was it words or more of a “Wooh!”?

STORY: At the Texas State Fair there is a section called the Midway which is filled with the games and rides. It’s also filled with some great game operators shouting to play their game – calling out individuals walking by. "Try your shot!" "Win! Win! Win!" "You look like you've got a strong arm! Knock these cans down!" It is a bustling, loud, bright, and joyful street. It kinda reminds me of Jesus’s entrance to Jerusalem, one with cheers and celebration. The people had heard the great miracles of Jesus, and they believed in His power. The people displayed their worship of Jesus by waving palm branches and laying them out on the path as Jesus rode into the city on a donkey. The people shouted “Hosanna!” Do you know what that word means? It means “Save now!” The people were shouting hosanna because they believed Jesus was coming to be their king and to rule over them with goodness and mercy. They were probably expecting Him to be an actual king—like one who leads armies and sits on a throne—but Jesus is more than that. He is the King of kings. He is the King who came to save all who believe in Him from sin. John 3:16 says, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” This was the true reason why Jesus came—to bring salvation and eternal life for anyone who believes in Him. Jesus is the King who has come to save!

QUESTION: Why was Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem on a donkey important?

ANSWER: Jesus rode on a donkey to fulfill what God had promised long ago through the prophet Zechariah.  You can find the passage in Zechariah 9:9

QUESTION: What type of animal will Jesus be on when he returns?

ANSWER: Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. – Revelation 19:11
