Thriving on the Margins (1 Peter 1:1-2)

Community Group Discussion Questions

Helping one another love Jesus, His people, and His world.

Text:1 Peter 1:1-2

Sermon Title: Thriving on the Margins

Date:09-11-2022

  1. Did the description of Christians as “elect exiles” comfort you, discomfort you, or both? How? In what ways did Jesus become an elect exile?*
  2. What difference does it make to you that not only has Jesus embraced being a “Chosen-Outsider,” but that each of us are also a part of the “Selected-Rejected,” together?
  3. The sermon contained this quote from Juan Sanchez: “In these hardening times, some of us will be tempted to compromise what we believe to “fit in” or to avoid suffering, while others of will be tempted to bemoan all that is wrong with our world and long nostalgically for a better time, long forgotten (and that likely never existed).”Are you more prone to the temptation of assimilating as a “compromiser” or withdrawing as a “bemoaner”? How might you need to be challenged by those in our group?*

*Questions adapted from 1 Peter For You, by Juan Sanchez.*

  1. What makes it difficult to believe the gospel applies to you? Why do we needthis objective, visible demonstration of the gospel in the bread and the cup of communion? How does Communion nourish your love for Jesus?
  2. In a world of increasing inequalities, how is communion a leveling reality? How have you experienced it nourishing community? Protecting it?
  3. How does Communion distinguish Christians from non-Christians? In what way(s) does this distinction serve as a gospel witness to non-Christians?
