Jesus performs miracles in Capernaum; calling out unclean spirits and healing the people. His miracles, which showed his authority over the spiritual and physical world, strengthened people’s faith AND met their needs.
DISCUSSION: Do people exaggerate what they can do or how important they are? How did Jesus’ miracles prove He is God’s Son and was not exaggerating?
The miracles in the story were removing unclean spirits and healing illness & ailments. This shows that Jesus had power over both the spiritual and physical world. His miracles VALIDATED his teachings | John 14:10-11
STORY: To board an airplane in the United States, an adult is required to show a photo ID and a boarding pass. The identification card helps security know that people are who they say they are, and the boarding pass shows that they have a reason for moving about the airport and boarding the plane. Jesus didn’t just say he was the Messiah, he proved he was.. He didn’t do this through an ID but instead through the things he said and did, like miracles. On one occasion, Jesus commanded an unclean spirit to leave a man, and immediately the man was healed. The people were amazed at His power. On another occasion, Jesus healed Simon’s mother-in-law who was very sick. When the people heard the news, they came to Jesus to be healed of their sickness. Again and again, Jesus performed miracles that amazed the people and led many to believe in Him.
QUESTION: Are the miracles Jesus performed proof that he is the Son of God?
ANSWER: Most definitely! It is NOT the ONLY proof we should look at when asking if Jesus is the Son of God, but it shows his heavenly power, even power over death.
DISCUSSION: What miracle would you want Jesus to perform for you or your family?
Q: After answering what miracles you Jesus to perform, the next question is, can you ask him for those miracles?
A: Yes, we can always ask! And God will always hear. Even if something seems impossible or it’s something that God doesn’t care about, we can always pray. God may not grant our desire, and while it is hard to trust, we know that God is writing our best story.
