Community Group Discussion Questions

Making disciples through the mutual ministry of

redemptive relationships

Text: Jonah 1:1-3

 Sermon Title: Surprising Mercy

Date: August 18, 2019

  1. Read Exodus 34:5-9. What does this passage say about Who God is and who we are? Why is it important to get both of those right?
  2. What New Testament passages show us that God has been merciful to you in the midst of your sin?
  3. In a way that is sensitive to others in the room (who might be in this category in some way), share with the group who is your “them”?                                                 **Who then are the “us-es” that you most identify with?
  4. How did you get here? In other words, what in your life has helped contribute to you seeing “them” as “them” and your “us” as “us”? Some questions that could help you here follow: Where did you grow up? What was your family of origin’s values and beliefs that shaped this us and them? What experiences have you had that has formed you seeing them as “them” and others as “us”?
  5. What would it look like for you to reach out to “them” and not run from “them” (and run from God in the process)?
  6. In what ways can you help yourself see and remember God’s great mercy for you?
