Thanksgiving in our God

“1To the choirmaster: according to Muth-labben. A Psalm of David.

I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart;

I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.

2I will be glad and exult in you;

I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.”

Psalm 9:1-2

As we head into Thanksgiving week it is helpful to remember God’s faithfulness, to recount all of his blessings, and to respond with a heart overflowing with thanks.  The Psalm makes it clear where our joy comes from.  It doesn’t say that we are glad because of our physical circumstances.  It doesn’t say we are glad in our helpless selves or in our broken relationships.  It says “I will be glad and exult in you”!  We can find true joy in our God.  Our Lord gives us a gift of mercy, rest, joy, and hope.  Let’s remember that with a thankful heart as we worship this Sunday!

Unshakeable Future in Christ

Hebrews 12:22–24 “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant.”

Hebrews 12:28–29 “Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.”

Often, it’s easy to let anxiety, fear, worry, or negative thoughts rule our mind in this crazy and broken world.  We make these thoughts idols above God. This passage speaks about this hopeful place where we are destined to live, Mount Zion, where God dwells.  But why is this place so full of hope?  This heavenly kingdom provides ultimate life, peace, and joy beyond our present day.  But how do we, broken sinners, receive such an inheritance?  We are able to receive this kingdom because Jesus interceded for us as our mediator and suffered for our sins so that we can live with him forever.  What a blessing!  Our hope is no longer in the broken kingdoms of this world, but our hope is in the unshakable heavenly kingdom of God.   As a result, we should cast aside a heart of complaint, turn, and worship God.  Our God is holy, set apart, and is a just judge.  As verse 29 says, he is a consuming fire. We need to understand that we couldn’t worship this God of consuming fire if it weren’t for Christ.  He brought us to himself.  So let come together this Sunday morning and worship with reverence and awe.
