Jesus and the Rules (Matthew 5:17-20)

 Community Group Discussion Questions

Making disciples through the mutual ministry of

redemptive relationships

Text: Matthew 5:7-20

Sermon Title: Jesus and the Rules

Date: November 4, 2018

  1. This question is for fun. When it comes to board games or sports, are you more of a rule follower or a rule bender/stretcher? How do family and friends in the “other camp” relate to you? How do you relate to them?
  2. In Matthew 5:17, Jesus addresses the silent conclusion of His disciples, based on what He told them in Matthew 5:1-16; the conclusion that Jesus means to do away with the Law and the Prophets. Why would the disciples come to this conclusion? Do you come to the same conclusion? Explain.
  3. Read Exodus 20:12-17, Romans 13:8-10, and Romans 3:19-20. According to these texts, what three reasons was the law given?
  4. In the sermon, Craig said, “The way we esteem the law is the way we esteem our God.” Do you agree? Explain.
  5. What works righteousness do you need to turn away from? In other words, how are you tempted to fill in the following blank: “I must/canpursue       in order ‘be good’ or right with God.”  (i.e., family involvement, politics, spiritual disciplines, church or community service, a pure sexual ethic, competenceat work, ethical integrity at school, the giving of money generously, etc.)?
  6. How does your pursuit fall short of God’s standard for meriting favor and fellowship with Him?
  7. How did Jesus fully fulfill (in a way that doesn't fall short) this specific righteousness you pursue? How will trusting in His work help you turn away from trusting in your work?
  8. What will repentance from this works righteousness look like in your life?

redemptive relationships

Text: Matthew 5:3-12

Sermon Title: The Vision of the Good Life

Date: October 21, 2018

  1. What is your philosophy of the good life? In other words, what does a meaningful life look like for you? What word are you most tempted to fill in the blank with: “If only I had/was              , then I would really be flourishing; then I would truly be ‘privileged’”?
  2. Read Psalm 40:16-17, Psalm 69:32-33, and Psalm 72:12-14. What do these passages teach us about being poor? Why do you think Jesus says that His Kingdom of Heaven belongs to the “poor in Spirit”?
  3. Rad Joel 2:12-13 and James 4:7-10. What do we learn about the role of mourning in these passages?
  4. Read Isaiah 53. Based on this passage, how did Jesus perfectly demonstrate meekness?
  5. Which one of the kingdom characteristics listed in Matthew 5:3-12 is most counter-intuitive or seemingly “upside down” to you? Explain.
  6. Which one of these characteristics have you seen the Savior growing you in during your walk with Him?
  7. Which one of these kingdom characteristics are most unlike you currently?
    1. How has Jesus specifically expressed this very characteristic in relating to you?
    2. What do you need from God to grow in this specific area?
  8. What individual(s) do you need to pursue or what “lines” can you step across to be a peacemaker (v. 8)? How does the fact that Jesus came and died to make peace with you help you do this?
  9. Which characteristic of God’s kingdom listed in the beatitudes are you most eager to experience in perfection when the Kingdom of God comes in full? Explain.
