Forgive Us (Matthew 6:12)

                                       Community Group Discussion Questions

Making disciples through the mutual ministry of
                                                 redemptive relationships.

                                                       Text: Matthew 6:12
Sermon Title: Forgive Us Our Debts
                                                     Date: October 4, 2020

  1. Read Matthew 18:21-35. Which character (in this parable) does Jesus want his listeners to identify with most? Who do you identify with most? Explain.
  2. When you think about the debt you owe God, do you think first more about sins of omission (good you’ve left undone) or sins of commission (sins you’ve done)? How does this impact the way you view your debt to God? How does it shape your requests for forgiveness?
  3. Do you focus more on your sins or God’s grace when you ask Him for forgiveness? How will focusing on the “Running Father” impact the way you pray this prayer?
  4. Who are you demanding repayment from because of the ways they have wronged you? How are you doing this? What fears do you have about forgiving this person? Why is it so hard to forgive them?

In what ways is forgiveness of another a gift we give to ourselves? Explain how this act is even possible.

Your Will Be Done (Matthew 6:9-10)

Making disciples through the mutual ministry of

                                                 redemptive relationships.

                                                       Text: Matthew 6:9-10

Sermon Title: Your Will be Done

                                                     Date: September 20, 2020

  1. Read John 4:34. The verse reveals Jesus’ heart attitude toward obedience. In what ways was God’s will like food to Him?
  2. Prayer is “about making God’s concerns our concerns, his agenda our agenda...It’s about getting us on God’s side rather than getting God to our side” What about this is helpful? What about this is challenging?
  3. What are you most prone to: “trying to make God do my will (a.k.a., (magic),” or “faith-less-ness, disguised as a resignation to ‘your will be done’ (prayer-less-ness)? How does this impact your prayers?
  4. What biblical command or teaching (His reveled will) do you want God’s help to understand and obey?
  5. In what area of your life do you need God’s help to trust His secret will?
  6. “Our security and our rest today is not that we will obey his revealed will and trust him with his secret will. No, our security today is that though we have repeatedly placed our will above his, Jesus faithfully submitted himself to his Father’s will and paid the ultimate price so that we might be forgiven and be joined to his people. What hope or encouragement does this “news” give you, today?

  • These questions were adapted from Phillip Ryken’s book, “When you Pray: Making the Lord’s Prayer Your Own.”
