Scripture is abundantly clear on the point of the Glory of God. He is glorious. He sits on his throne, ruling over everything, seen and unseen. He lacks nothing, needs nothing, misses nothing. He is the King. There is no debate. There is no wiggle room. It's not a matter of opinion or a point of decision. He simply IS God, glorious, transcendent, all-powerful, all-knowing. He is above all, in every possible way.

 

As a result, He deserves all of the affection and praises and obedience of every part of creation. In fact, He demands it. And so we, have a simple choice each and every moment of each and every day. We can enthrone him in our hearts in accordance with the TRUTH he has revealed about himself, or we can choose to rebel against his commands and his authority. 

 

The foolishness I reveal every time I make a choice contrary to God's authority is truly incredible. Every sinful thought, every rebellious deed is unthinkable in the grand scheme of things, but we all succumb to the myopic and fleshly perspectives that are contrary to the revealed TRUTH of the King seated on the throne.

 

This Sunday, as we gather, we'll seek to point our hearts to the majesty and glory of the King enthroned in heaven, and seek to remind ourselves of the mercy He has shown us in rescuing us from the deserved punishment for our rebellion. It's this combination of his mercy and his majesty that we will celebrate.

This Sunday officially begins Advent for 2018. Advent is a time when we reflect on the longing God has placed in every person to know God personally and his promises to make himself known to us. It's a time when we remember the longings of God's people for the promised Messiah to come. It's a time when we look back on the miraculous and unexpected manner and effects of that first coming of Jesus in Bethlehem in the presence of shepherds, animals and angels.

 

Advent is a season of looking back.

 

But Advent is not just for looking back. It's even more for looking forward to the second coming of Christ. It's for resting in the promises of Jesus to come again and put an end to all of the suffering, sin, pain, sorrow and brokenness in the world. It's a time for anticipating Him creating a new Heavens and a new Earth. It's a time for looking forward, knowing that we can do so with confidence since we have a God who never changes...whose unexpected and inimitable first coming is the down payment and assurance for his second and final coming.

 

So as we come together on Sunday, let's do so looking back and looking forward, ready to worship the God who has come down to rescue us and and who promises to come back again to bring us home!
