Let the Word Dwell in You Richly

Colossians 3:16-17 says:

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

As we continue our series on the Scriptures from Psalm 119, I was thinking of this passage from Colossians this week.  We are called to allow the Word of Christ, the Gospel, the Truth to dwell in us richly.  We are called to allow it to saturate our thinking and our priorities.  We are called to meditate on the Word, to delight in the Word, to discuss the Word, to memorize the Word....all of those are components that I think are wrapped up in the phrase, "Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly."

And God is kind to give us the "why" right here in this verse...so that we can build up the Church and give thanks to God.  As we marinate our lives in the Word of Christ, that is to have the effect of causing us to function as His Body in the Church.  The Word will equip us to teach and admonish one another so that we might grow in holiness and joy in the Lord.  The Word will motivate us to sing with gratitude in our hearts to God.  The Word will motivate and sustain us in our pursuit of honoring God in all we do.  And the Word will foster thankfulness in our hearts, such that we do all of these things for the glory of God and in grateful response to Gospel Truth.

May we be a people in whom the Word of Christ dwells richly.  This Sunday, we'll sing songs that encourage us to trust in and be thankful for Word of God and Gospel Story it contains.

A Living Hope

1 Peter 1:3-5 says:

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,  who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time."

When was the last time you just took a few minutes to bless and thank God for the great mercy he showed you when he caused you to be born again into a living hope?  When was the last time you rejoiced in your salvation? When was the last time you paused to consider the imperishable, undefiled and unfading inheritance that Christ purchased for you when he rose from the dead?

I am ashamed to say it's not a regular habit for me.  Sure, I thank the Lord for various things daily.  I think him for his provision, for his daily mercy and sustaining grace.  But I don't often take time to really consider the incredible transformation of my circumstances - from death to life, from rebel to friend, from enemy to heir - that Christ made possible by stepping down from Heaven and taking on flesh to bear my punishment, that I might have hope...and not just a stale, vague, theoretical hope, but a living hope that He proves over and over by his active guarding of me by faith.

Do you look forward to the fullness of your salvation being revealed on the Last Day?  Do you look back with joy and thankfulness on the day you were born again?  May we all grow in recounting the miracle of the Living Hope to which we have been brought forth through his victory over death and sin!

We have a wonderful opportunity to do just that this Sunday, as we celebrate baptisms of some brothers and sisters who want to public recount and declare their testimony of having brought from death to life...to proclaim their living hope.

Here are the Scriptures and Songs that will be included in our service this Sunday:

-Call to Worship from 1 Peter 1:-3-5
-Rejoice
-Living Hope
-Baptism with Romans 6:4
-Death Was Arrested
-Sermon from Psalm 119

I hope you'll recount your personal testimony this weekend and come ready on Sunday to celebrate with us! Here is a Spotify playlist of the songs, so that you can get familiar with these songs.
