The Gift of the Word

As we just completed our series on "A Generous Life", and are getting started this Sunday with our Study on Psalm 119: "Transformed", I was reminded what a gift the Word of God is to me.  We are surrounded in this world with alternative "truths" which are often at odds with one another, and it can be so difficult to discern fact from fiction in our society.

Alternative facts, "Fake News", biased journalism, and political agendas all mingle with our natural rebelliousness as people, and we are pulled away from a reliance on a single, inerrant, source of Truth.  And while the world tells us that truth is relative, reality is staring us right in the face from the pages of Scripture.

1 Timothy 3: 16-17 says:

"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."

We believe that Scripture contains all that is needed for us to live lives filled with good works that glorify God.  God's Word has the corner on the market of Truth. It is the sole source of fundamental Truth for all of life.  And so, only a fool would look to other, contradictory, sources for direction and understanding.  The gift of God's Word is such a precious gift that we should treasure and enjoy and keep in a tight grip.

May we not be fools, but, with David, cry out to the Lord:

"Let my cry come before you, O Lord;
give me understanding according to your word!
Let my plea come before you;
deliver me according to your word.
My lips will pour forth praise,
for you teach me your statutes.
My tongue will sing of your word,
for all your commandments are right."  - Psalm 119:169-172

As we come to worship on Sunday, let us lay aside anything that seeks to displace the Lord at the center of our lives, and anything that seeks to displace his Word as the source of Truth in our lives.  Here are the Scriptures and Songs that will be included in our service this Sunday:

Corporate Prayer from Psalm 119:169-172
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
Nobody Like You
Yours
Crowns
Speak, O Lord
Sermon from Psalm 119

I Shall Not Want

Psalm 23 says:

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
     He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
     He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
     for his name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
     I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
     your rod and your staff,
     they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
     in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
     my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
     all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
     forever."

As we close our series on "A Generous Life" this coming Sunday, I have been been reflecting on the truth from Craig's first sermon about how God's generosity toward us forms the foundation and model for any generosity of heart that we display or desire to display in our lives.  The imagery in Scripture of God shepherding us, providing all the needs for his sheep who, apart from the miracle of His provision, would be totally helpless, is one that never ceases to impact me.

I don't tend to think of myself as helpless and in need of constant care and provision.  I don't tend toward acknowledging my lack or my own deficiencies.  But what better way could there be for me to view myself than as a helpless sheep taken care of by an infinitely gracious, competent, powerful, loving, and generous Shepherd.  Why would I want to resist that kind of position?  I couldn't possibly achieve a better situation by any effort I could make.  And from a place of resting in the Shepherd's care, there should and must be, then, and overflow of generosity toward the others He has placed in my path.

This Sunday, we'll be meditating again, recounting again, the glory of the Gospel, that the Good Shepherd would lay down his life as the ultimate expression of his care for his sheep....how he gave even his final breath, holding nothing back in his sacrifice for us.  And then we'll celebrate the opportunity we have to live humbly and generously in response to His example. Here are the Scriptures and Songs which will form our services this Sunday:
