redemptive relationships

Text: Matthew 5:3-12

Sermon Title: The Vision of the Good Life

Date: October 21, 2018

  1. What is your philosophy of the good life? In other words, what does a meaningful life look like for you? What word are you most tempted to fill in the blank with: “If only I had/was              , then I would really be flourishing; then I would truly be ‘privileged’”?
  2. Read Psalm 40:16-17, Psalm 69:32-33, and Psalm 72:12-14. What do these passages teach us about being poor? Why do you think Jesus says that His Kingdom of Heaven belongs to the “poor in Spirit”?
  3. Rad Joel 2:12-13 and James 4:7-10. What do we learn about the role of mourning in these passages?
  4. Read Isaiah 53. Based on this passage, how did Jesus perfectly demonstrate meekness?
  5. Which one of the kingdom characteristics listed in Matthew 5:3-12 is most counter-intuitive or seemingly “upside down” to you? Explain.
  6. Which one of these characteristics have you seen the Savior growing you in during your walk with Him?
  7. Which one of these kingdom characteristics are most unlike you currently?
    1. How has Jesus specifically expressed this very characteristic in relating to you?
    2. What do you need from God to grow in this specific area?
  8. What individual(s) do you need to pursue or what “lines” can you step across to be a peacemaker (v. 8)? How does the fact that Jesus came and died to make peace with you help you do this?
  9. Which characteristic of God’s kingdom listed in the beatitudes are you most eager to experience in perfection when the Kingdom of God comes in full? Explain.

Text: Matthew 5:1-2

Sermon Title: The Greatest Sermon Ever

Date: October 14, 2018

  1. How have you interpreted the Sermon on the Mount previously (“law” leading to the gospel of grace, “a pattern” for believers to follow by the power of the Holy Spirit, applicable for private and civil life now, only applicable for clergy, or moral ethics for God’s people in the coming kingdom solely)?
  2. Read Matthew 5-7. What is one question you have about this text that you hope will be answered in our new sermon series? Which part of this text is the most attractive and/or easiest to receive? Which part is the most difficult or unnatural for you to receive and/or apply? Explain.
  3. Read Exodus 20:1-21. What are the similarities between this text and the Sermon on the Mount? What are differences?
    1. Why are verses 1 and 2 key to understanding the rest of Exodus 20? Where do we find the equivalent in Matthew and why is this important for us not to miss?
  4. In his sermon, Craig said that we all have three options when choosing an authority to submit to: 1) myself and my wisdom 2) The opinion of others and society as a whole and 3) Jesus. What does your life reveal about your choice here?
  5. What is the area(s) in your life that you pray God will transform you in through our time in this text over these next months?
  6. The three points of the sermon were: 1) Jesus is the King; hear His teaching and submit 2) Jesus is the Deliverer; hear His teaching and be free and 3) Jesus is the Prophet; hear His teaching and hope. Which one of these “offices” of Jesus is most encouraging or convicting for you today? Explain
